What's Included in a Pre-Purchase Yacht Inspection?

A Pre-Purchase yacht inspection includes a thorough assessment of the vessel's structural integrity, mechanical systems, electrical systems, and safety equipment, as well as an out-of-water inspection and sea trial. The goal is to identify any potential problems or issues that could affect the boat's safety, performance, or value before finalising the purchase

Hull and Deck:

  • Visual inspection: Checking for cracks, blisters, signs of damage, and corrosion.
  • Moisture testing: For fiberglass boats, for early detection of moisture ingress that can lead to delamination
  • Structural integrity: Inspecting the hull, deck, and superstructure for any weaknesses or repairs.
  • Out-of-water inspection: Examining the hull below the waterline for osmosis, damage, corrosion, or issues with the rudder, propeller, or shafts. Rudder and shaft bearings are checked.

Mechanical Systems and Plumbing:

  • Engine: Visually inspecting the engine, transmission, and related components, including belts, hoses, and mounts. Engine tests are conducted on the sea trial.
  • Fuel systems: Checking for leaks, corrosion, and proper installation.
  • Steering and controls: Inspecting and operating the steering system, throttle, and shift mechanisms.
  • Pumps and Plumbing: Assessing the condition and operation of bilge pumps, freshwater pumps, and underwater plumbing systems including sea cocks and skin fittings.

Electrical Systems:

  • Wiring: Inspecting the wiring for proper installation, condition, and potential hazards.
  • Batteries: Inspecting the batteries for compliant installation and visual defects.
  • Navigation and communication equipment: Evaluating the functionality of GPS, radar, VHF radio, and other electronic equipment.
  • Lighting and other electrical components: Checking the operation of interior and exterior lighting, and Navigation lights

Safety Equipment:

  • Life jackets: Inspecting for proper condition and quantity.
  • Fire extinguishers: Checking for compliance and expiration dates.
  • Other safety gear: Inspection and date checking of items like flares and EPIRBS.
  • Anchor Winch and Chain: Anchor winch is tested and chain inspected (where accessible)

Sails and Rigging (where fitted):

  • Sails: Sails are deployed and inspected during the sea trial.
  • Rigging: Rigging is inspected from deck level only.
  • Deck gear: Deck gear and winches are tested where required during the sea trial. All winches are spun to check for worn or seized bearings.

Sea Trial

  • A sea trial is completed to test the mechanical systems, steering and navigational systems. Sails are deployed where fitted.
